Welcome to the 2018 Golf Season!

The golf season has started out slower than we are used to, but that is not going to stop us from gearing up and teeing off for the start of a great season!

Over the winter our team has been thinking of ways to improve on and enhance our customers experiences. Whether it’s in our clubhouse or on our course we are always striving for better. Below are a few things that we would like to address, and bring to your attention for the season moving forward.

Starting May 1st 2018 PNGC will be enforcing our dress code.

Dress code is as follows:

Men are required to wear slacks or Bermuda-length shorts with a collared golf shirt.

Ladies are required to wear Bermuda-length shorts, skirts, skorts, capris or slacks. Women can wear sleeved or sleeveless collared golf shirts.

Prohibited Attire Items:

Denim shorts, jeans, T-shirts, sleeveless shirts (men), denim shirts, tank-tops, tube-tops, and shirts with inappropriate words or images are not permitted.

New rangering procedures will now make communication between our golfers and our rangers seamless. PNGC has started a flagging system that will allow our rangers to communicate while you are golfing without having to disrupt play. The flag system works as follows:

Green Flag – On Pace (no changes need made)

Yellow Flag – Pick Up Pace

Red Flag – Pick up your ball and move to the next hole, cart number will be notated. If your group gets a second red flag, a member of management will be out to address the situation and you will be asked to make changes to play. Changes could include: letting a group or more play through, skipping holes to increase pace, or to end your round all together.

We expect our patrons to respect our team members with the decisions they set forth for the benefit for all of our golfers at all times. If at any time you do not follow the rules and procedures set forth by our team you will be asked to leave PNGC property.

Pace Guide

One of our biggest complaints to date is our pace of play. We have started new rangering procedures that will aid in keeping pace, but we will need help from our golfers as well!

One of our most noticed issues is that more and more golfers are using the incorrect tee boxes when golfing our course. As a USGA member we encourage a program called “Tee it Forward”. The program itself is designed to help golfers enjoy their round a little more and enhance their overall experience. Tee it forward encourages all golfers to play the course at a length that is aligned with their average driving distance. Below is an illustrated chart describing how to judge what tee box is best suited for you at PNGC!

OPEN FOR BUSINESS!

This winter has been long, and has caused delay in our opening of Harry’s Bar and Grill. Hopefully the winter weather is behind us as we will be doing a soft opening of our pub Monday, April 23rd. For the first week of business we will be offering a limited menu and running on limited hours. The first week of May you can expect Harry’s to be open 7 days a week, with our new pub style menu! Starting in May, Harry’s will be posting weekly menu and drink specials on our interactive web-page. This page can be found on our website under the Harry’s Bar and Grill tab. GHIN CHANGES

PNGC is proud to be a USGA member club, and moving into 2018 we have made a few changes within our clubhouse in regards to our GHIN network. Listed below are how these changes will effect our golfers whom currently house their GHIN with us, or other golfers looking for a GHIN home.

Changes and Information

For our members, card holders, and our regular customers that plan on returning to PNGC to house their GHIN, know that your GHIN dues are due now. They are $35 and can be paid anytime over the phone or upon your next visit to the course.

CHANGES

-In 2015, the 2016 PNGC memberships classifications were simplified, including a marked price reduction. In previous years GHIN dues had been included in our full membership packages, however, under the restructured 2016 packages GHIN subscriptions dues were not included. Inadvertently a number of individuals were not charged, however, moving forward membership holders will be charged GHIN fees to keep with the standard of golf clubs charging members separately for their GHIN. Should any member not wish to have an active GHIN, they are not under any obligation to pay the fee.

-We have also decided to filter whom we allow to house their GHIN within our clubhouse network. If you have housed your GHIN with us in the previous season you will have no problem paying to renew your subscription. Others inquiring about GHIN membership will need to speak with our clubhouse manager before paying and/or registering for a GHIN.

Things at Pittsburgh National Golf Club change all the time, so we decided to dedicate every Friday to a newsletter update. If there is anything specific that you would like to know about just leave a note in the comments below.

Update:

With a heavy heart we here at PNGC would like to inform you of the passing of one of our our own Executive Chef, Andrew Potyka. He passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 17th. He was beloved here by all of our employee’s and our patrons. We intend on honoring him here at the golf club in a special way, that will be a mainstay on the course. Our prayers and thoughts are with Andrew’s family, friends, and all who were part of his life.

Member and Course News

Spring has finally sprung at PNGC, and we are almost in full swing all around the course. We are all very excited to be sending out the first newsletter of the 2016 season. Here at the course we have been working all through the off season with course improvements, and clubhouse improvements. Our pro shop has been relocated, and the current pro shop will be our clubhouse lounge which is now in the works. Also, we have a few new bunkers, on holes 10 & 17. They are finished and look great!! Here is the new bunker on 17.

More course news….

As most of you know at the end of last season we got an entire new fleet of club car golf carts. ViSAGE GPS systems have been installed in our carts. These are more than just a GPS. With these new additions in our carts you can get a total layout of each hole, the ability to keep an electronic score card for your car or your entire group, directly message the club house and/or other carts in front or behind you, receive messages from the club house and weather updates, pre-order food and/or drinks for when you’re close to the clubhouse to minimize your wait time. There are so many benefits to these additions and we can’t wait to share them with you.

Also, with this GPS system it gives us the opportunity for community advertising. The GPS program has non nuisance ad space. Meaning, ads are placed on the screen of the GPS never interfering with play. We will be offering these ad spaces at a first come first serve basis. These ads can be seen on average up to 30,000 + people per year. It is a great opportunity to get your business or cause in front of thousands. Here are some examples of ad space that can be used.

These are just a few examples of the ad space and when it is used. Watch for more information from us on buying ad space, and when it is put on screen.

PNGC is fully digital! We have a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and a Pintrest. In today’s day and age it is just not enough to have only a website. We would urge everyone with these social media outlets to follow, like, and share.

On our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, we post updates, information, pictures, specials, and events. These social options give us the ability to interact with all of our customers, and give them the option to interact back to leave feedback for better customer service and response. On our Pintrest, we post tips, tricks, golf etiquette, golf merchandise, and golfer humor. Here are links to all of our social media outlets. Just click on the icon, and join the movement.

BRATS are BACK

We have had many requests to bring back our amazing Bratwurst and the Chef listened. So, what exactly is Bratwurst? Dating back to 1313 the German combination of veal, beef, and/or pork made into sausage hit the Franconian city of Nuremburg. In the United States, Wisconsin is the most well-known Bratwurst area, especially for “beer brats. At Harry’s, you can come on in and enjoy a Brat with this week’s tapped Sierra Nevada, Nosferatu, Brawler, 2X, Guinness, Stella, Yuengling and Miller Lite.

We have completed tee box aeration and they are looking great. We expect a 100% recovery rate! We are looking into the future for aeration of the green’s, but it hasn’t been scheduled yet. When the dates are set we will make sure to let you know.

Pace of play is one of the biggest obstacles that the golf industry faces. We are always looking for ways to improve the pace of play, but step one is understanding what the expectation is, and what are the problems are.

What’s tapping: Having some spooky fun in Harry’s bringing in Nosferatu, the American bright red ale! Often referred to as the “Beer with a bite”, due to its 8% alcohol content, the taste is surprisingly smooth. Maybe the trickery of Halloween is upon us, but the usually bitter Irish-style ale is hidden in this tasty treat.

Pairings include Burgers or Beef, Chicken or Fish, so perfect for Harry’s menu options. Bring your appetites (and maybe cover your necks…ha ha!) to PNGC. Play a round of golf and then stop into Harry’s this week to grab a bite!

Member and Course News

We have now fully completed the aeration of all the fairways. Coupled with the benefits of aeration and rainfall we have being experiencing, the fairways have already bounced back nicely. The course in general is really greening up, and with the warmer temperatures predicted for the upcoming week, should make for good playing conditions.

Our greens have, and are still rolling as well as they have been all year, thanks to the hard work and dedication from the grounds crew. Members and guests, who have been playing the course for many years, have commented on the similarity in the condition of the greens from ten years ago.

In the coming week we will start the aeration of the tee boxes. We expect to see the same recovery that we have already experienced with the fairways.

I took a ride out today to check and see how the fairways were looking a week after aeration, these are my untouched HDR Photos!

Member and Course News

We are so honored to take some time this week to talk about two of our members and their recent accomplishments, Sean Knapp and Nathan Smith, are considered two of the best amateur golfers in this part of the state. Together, they won the Palmer Cup September 17th!

The two of them tee’d up against Bob Ford (director of golf at Oakmont Country Club) and his successor Devin Gee. Bob Ford is arguably one of the best club professional in the country! Sean and Nathan, built a pretty strong lead in the first few holes, that the pro’s just couldn’t catch up to. By the end of the day Knapp and Smith finished with four birdies, and no bogeys, While their competitors made just two birdies, and two bogeys. (Impressive!)

Also, on September 10th Knapp won the 30th annual Mid-Amateur Championship for the record breaking 9th time! He played an awesome 18 holes, making 5 birdies, and 3 bogeys for a total score of 70.

Sean Knapp and Nathan Smith will be inducted into the West Penn Golf Association Hall of Fame, October 14th at Chartiers Country Club. We are so proud to call them our members!

Our aeration of the fairways will continue Monday the 28th and Tuesday the 29th.

We understand that only having 9 holes open is not ideal, but this process will help reduce compaction, reduce thatch and also help prevent disease. We appreciate your understanding during this process and for your consideration we will be offering special rates during these days.

We have set up a golf outing and banquet to raise some money for this great cause.

Our day for help a hero will be set for Friday, October 2nd 2015. Signups are via the internet listed below, at sports clips in Gibsonia, or by registering with us at the pro shop.

Cost will be $100 per person for the outing and banquet.

Registration – 7:30 am

Pastry with coffee, at registration. Hot dog and bottle of water at the turn!

IF you’re a non-golfer and you just want to come to the banquet for the awards ceremony, awesome basket raffles and games.

Why We Aerate?

This Monday, and next monday we will be aerating the fairways. This is all too new for me, so I wanted to learn more about it. What it is and why we do it. So here is a little how and why about the importance of aeration, and some pictures of our course doing the job!

Aeration is the process by which holes are put into the greens to allow for (air) to be able to get into the soil beneath the greens or fairways. Aeration is needed when the soil beneath the surface becomes compacted. When the soil is compacted, the grass roots struggle to breathe. This process is so important to stimulate healthy root growth, by getting much needed oxygen into the high traffic areas.

**Making a clean aeration hole expedites turf recovery. The goal is to make a clean, surgical cut so that the turf heals rapidly and redirects its energy to producing new roots and leaves to fill the voids. (USGA Green Section)**

This process golfers begrudgingly understand, and we will try to get it finished in a timely manner. It is a necessary evil that keep our course on the right track to repair and improve overall course health!
